Regulatory Compliance

IoT and Regulatory Compliance in the Agri-Food Sector — What the Law Requires

European regulations and certification standards impose traceability and monitoring requirements that IoT-based monitoring automates directly.

HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points)

The HACCP plan is a legal requirement for all food businesses (Regulation (EC) No. 852/2004). It requires the identification of CCPs (critical control points), the establishment of critical limits, and continuous monitoring. The Eziwan IoT system automates the collection and traceability of monitoring data, replacing manual records that are prone to errors and omissions.

  • Automatic monitoring of CCPs (temperature, pH, pressure)
  • Time-stamped logging of measurements — tamper-proof
  • Immediate alerts when critical limits are exceeded

EC Regulation 178/2002 — Food Traceability

Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002 requires the traceability of food products at every stage of the supply chain (the “one step forward, one step back” principle). In the event of a health crisis, manufacturers must be able to trace a batch’s complete history within a few hours. The Eziwan platform retains production data (temperature, duration, batches) for at least 5 years.

  • Data logging by batch or by production unit
  • Correlating IoT Data with Batch Numbers
  • Exporting Data in the Event of an Audit or a Public Health Crisis

BRC/IFS — Certification Standards for the Food Industry

The BRC Global Standard for Food Safety and IFS Food Standard are voluntary certifications, but they are often required by major retailers. They impose requirements for traceability, cold chain management, and documentation of controls. The Eziwan platform provides the data and reports needed for annual audits.

  • Automated Documentation of Inspections for BRC/IFS Audits
  • Exportable time/temperature compliance records
  • Reduced audit preparation time

NIS2 Directive — OES IT Security

Agri-food companies of a certain size may be classified as operators of essential services (OES) and subject to the NIS2 Directive. This imposes cybersecurity requirements on OT/IT systems, including industrial supervision systems. The Eziwan platform is hosted in France with TLS encryption, strong authentication, and access logging.

  • Sovereign Hosting in France — ISO 27001
  • End-to-end TLS 1.3 encryption
  • Multifactor Authentication and Access Management
Features

A comprehensive platform for the agri-food industry

From cold chain monitoring to production line supervision, energy management, and audit reports: all in one.

Multi-zone temperature monitoring

Monitor all temperature zones at your facility simultaneously: cold rooms, warm rooms, blast freezers, pasteurizers, and ovens. Each sensor reports its reading every 30 seconds to 5 minutes, depending on the criticality of the zone. Real-time temperature graphs and long-term historical data.

Thermal drift alerts < 90 seconds

Set alert thresholds for each zone (e.g., cold room > 4°C for more than 5 minutes). An SMS alert is sent within 90 seconds to the quality manager and the maintenance manager. Escalation logic: Level 1 alert (SMS), Level 2 (phone call), Level 3 (management on call).

Automatic HACCP Logging

CCP monitoring data is automatically recorded with a timestamp, sensor ID, and measured value. No more manual paper records: the HACCP log is automatically generated as a PDF and retained for 5 years. Full compliance with the traceability requirements of Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002.

Production Line Supervision

Real-time production data retrieval from your PLCs (Siemens S7, Schneider M340/M580, Allen-Bradley) via Modbus TCP or OPC-UA: production rates, piece counters, uptime, energy consumption per piece of equipment, machine alarms. Line performance dashboard (OEE).

Collection of Siemens and Schneider VMs

Eziwan natively supports the industrial PLC protocols most commonly used in the food and beverage industry: Siemens SIMATIC S7 (S7-300, S7-400, S7-1200, S7-1500) via S7comm or OPC-UA, Schneider Modicon M340/M580 via Modbus TCP, Omron NX/NJ. Configure read requests via the web interface, without programming.

ERP and MES Integration

The Eziwan REST API (OAuth2, OpenAPI) enables bidirectional integration with your ERP (SAP, Sage, Infor, Microsoft Dynamics) and your MES (FactoryTalk, Wonderware, ProFactory). Production rates, consumption data, and quality data are uploaded to the information system. You can also receive production orders from the MES.

Energy Management — Steam, Refrigeration, Compressed Air

Energy costs often account for 15 to 30 percent of a food processing plant’s operating costs. Eziwan measures consumption of steam (Modbus flow meters), refrigeration (refrigeration capacity, COP of chillers), compressed air (pressure, flow rate, detected leaks), and electricity (multi-rate meters). Consumption reports by production area and by equipment.

Audit Reports and Document Compliance

With just one click, generate the reports you need for your BRC/IFS/IFS Logistics audits: temperature histories by zone, summaries of threshold exceedances and corrective actions, and records of critical control points (CCPs) for the audited period. The reports are in PDF format with your logo, automatically archived, and accessible from your customer portal.

Programs Offered

Eziwan across all agri-food sectors

Each industry has its own specific challenges. Here’s how Eziwan addresses the unique needs of each sector.

Dairy and Cheese Factory

The dairy industry faces a number of critical challenges: maintaining the cold chain for raw milk (< 4°C), pasteurization (72°C/15 s or 63°C/30 min), aging in cellars (precise temperature and humidity), and storage of finished products.

  • Temperature Monitoring of Raw Milk Receiving Area and Storage Tanks
  • Pasteurizer monitoring: time/temperature, CIP (clean-in-place)
  • Maturation cellar monitoring: temperature ±0.5°C, relative humidity
  • Alerts in the Event of a Break in the Cold Chain

Slaughterhouse and Cutting Plant

Slaughterhouses and meat-processing plants are subject to strict veterinary inspections. Food safety traceability must be flawless at every stage of the process.

  • Temperature in cutting rooms (regulation: < 12°C for cattle)
  • Monitoring of the carcass soaking and cooling line
  • Traceability of batches and temperatures by workshop
  • Oversight of Cleaning and Disinfection Equipment

Industrial Bakery and Pastry Shop

Industrial baking processes involve critical steps: controlled fermentation, precise baking, and rapid cooling.

  • Monitoring of fermentation and proofing chambers (Temperature, Relative Humidity)
  • Oven monitoring: temperature by zone (hearth, dome), baking time
  • Monitor cooling before packaging (to prevent condensation)
  • Energy Management: Oven, Chiller, and Compressed Air Consumption

Beverages and Bottling

Bottling and canning lines require monitoring of CIP, carbonation, and sterilization parameters.

  • CIP (Clean In Place) Monitoring: temperature, concentration, flow rate, duration
  • Carbonation control: CO₂ pressure, carbonation temperature
  • Monitoring of tunnel pasteurizers or flash pasteurization
  • Line speed, operating rate, water and energy consumption

Deep-Freezing and Cold-Chain Logistics

Cold-chain logistics warehouses and deep-freeze storage units must maintain very low temperatures (−18°C to −30°C) at all times.

  • 24-hour monitoring of deep-freeze chambers (−30°C to −18°C)
  • Threshold Exceeded Alarm with Escalation to Night On-Call Duty
  • Continuous Logging for Regulatory Compliance
  • Monitoring of refrigeration units: pressure, temperature, COP
