What is the difference between the Eziwan Gateway and a consumer 4G router?

The Eziwan Gateway is certified for temperatures ranging from -40°C to +75°C, withstands mechanical vibrations and shocks (DIN rail EN 35), features a hardware watchdog for automatic restart in case of a freeze, and includes automatic dual-SIM failover. The power supply accepts 9 to 30V DC (not 5V via USB). The firmware is updated securely via signed OTA updates. The target service life is 10 years without replacement.

Can the Gateway read AND write to PLCs (read + control)?

Yes. In Modbus RTU (RS-485) and Modbus TCP, the Eziwan Gateway supports read function codes (FC01 coils, FC02 inputs, FC03 holding registers, FC04 input registers) AND write function codes (FC05 single coil, FC06 single register, FC15 multiple coils, FC16 multiple registers). Write commands can be triggered from the cloud dashboard, via the REST API (POST endpoint /api/v1/devices/{id}/command), or by an automation rule (if variable A > threshold, write value X to register Y). Each collected register is individually configurable: acquisition frequency from 100 ms to 24 hours, local storage mode if the network is unavailable.

OpenVPN uses TLS and AES-256-GCM, with mutual authentication via X.509 certificates and excellent firewall traversal (TCP 443, like HTTPS). In client mode, the Gateway establishes an encrypted tunnel to the Eziwan Cloud VPN server (hosted in France, AWS Paris eu-west-3). In peer-to-peer mode, two Gateways can establish a direct LAN-to-LAN tunnel without going through the cloud (direct remote access to your industrial network). Compatibility with existing VPN infrastructures: OpenVPN is supported by pfSense, OPNsense, Fortinet FortiGate, Palo Alto, and Cisco ASA (via plugin). What happens if the 4G connection is lost? Is the data lost?

No. The Eziwan Gateway includes a store-and-forward mode with local storage on 512 MB of flash memory (expandable via microSD card up to 32 GB). In the event of a network outage, data continues to be collected and stored locally with its exact timestamp. Upon reconnection, the gateway forwards the data in chronological order to the cloud. Typical disconnections (such as a lost 4G connection lasting a few minutes) are transparent: no data is lost. For very remote sites with prolonged outages, the 32 GB capacity allows for the storage of several months’ worth of data collected at one-minute intervals.

Does the Gateway work with M2M SIM cards or only with consumer SIM cards?

The Eziwan Gateway is compatible with all SIM cards: consumer SIMs (Nano SIM, 4FF format), multi-carrier industrial M2M SIMs, and programmable eSIMs. The dual-nano SIM tray supports two SIMs simultaneously with automatic failover in the event of signal loss. Eziwan offers its own multi-carrier M2M SIMs (Orange + SFR + Bouygues on a single SIM via permanent national roaming) to eliminate carrier dead zones. These SIMs feature a dedicated private IP address to isolate your IoT traffic from the public network and guarantee a fixed IP address.

What certifications does the Gateway have for ATEX environments and hazardous areas?

The standard Eziwan Gateway (IP40 industrial version) is not ATEX-certified. For ATEX zones (explosive atmospheres—refineries, chemical plants, gas facilities, flour mills), the Gateway must be installed in an ATEX-certified enclosure for Zone 2 (gas) or Zone 22 (dust) with safety barriers on the inputs/outputs. A common alternative is to install the Gateway in a safe area and use ATEX-certified fiber-optic links or galvanic isolators to connect equipment in the hazardous area. For orders of more than 10 units, delivery takes 2 to 3 weeks with bulk configuration (ZTP—Zero Touch Provisioning). Spare parts and replacement units are available for 10 years from the date of market release.
