4G Router + M2M SIM: The Two Sides of a Successful IoT Deployment
Choosing a good industrial 4G router without choosing the right M2M SIM card is like buying a car without the right fuel. The M2M SIM card isn’t just an accessory—it’s half the equation.
Common mistakes:
- Consumer SIM in an industrial router: works at first, then stability issues, inappropriate pricing, and unmanaged service interruptions.
- Standard M2M SIM without a private APN: industrial equipment is on the public Internet, exposed to scans.
- Single-carrier SIM at a critical site: a carrier outage = site goes offline.
- No fleet management: uncontrolled data usage; impossible to detect a SIM with excessive data usage (a sign of an attack or a bug).
Choosing the Right M2M SIM Card for an Industrial Router
Compatibility Chart
| Requirement | Recommended SIM | Router Configuration |
|---|---|---|
| Remote VPN access (1 hr/week) | M2M SIM 500 MB/month | Static IP, private APN + OpenVPN |
| Modbus monitoring (5 min) | M2M SIM 100 MB/month | Private APN + MQTT |
| Critical site (pumping, energy) | Multi-carrier M2M SIM | Dual SIM failover |
| Large-scale deployment (50+ sites) | Pooled M2M SIMs (shared pool) | ZTP + fleet management |
| Single sensor (1 message/hour) | NB-IoT SIM 10 MB/month | Integrated LPWAN mode |
Private APN: Settings You Shouldn’t Forget
The APN (Access Point Name) is the SIM card’s network setting. On an industrial 4G router, it is configured in the cellular settings:
APN: iot.eziwan.priv
Username: (blank or as specified by the carrier)
Password: (blank or as specified by the operator)
IP type: IPv4
Authentication: PAP ou CHAP
With a dedicated private APN, traffic from your devices never passes through the public Internet—it remains within a private carrier tunnel between the SIM cards and your cloud infrastructure.
The Eziwan Approach
Eziwan Connectivity offers pre-configured M2M SIM cards for Eziwan gateways: Private APN enabled, static IP available, native multi-carrier support, and fleet management in the Eziwan Cloud. A single order for the gateway and SIM: everything is pre-paired, so deployment is as simple as plugging in the equipment on-site.
